#Smearforsmear Cervical Cancer prevention week

#SmearforSmear Campaign

A bit of a different post from me today but it's a very important one! In case you didn't know, this week (Jan 22nd to 28th) is Cervical Cancer Prevention Week. The #SmearforSmear campaign is now in its 4th year and has proven a great success in terms of raising awareness of cervical cancer and also serving to remind all of us ladies to book in for our smear test because it could save our life.

Smear tests only take a few minutes and they prevent 75% of cervical cancers - but it is imperative that you have it done! 1 in 4 women don't attend their smear test, which is crazy given that cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women under the age of 35.

The test itself only takes a few minutes and for some is mildly uncomfortable - others don't feel anything, either way it's a lot less painful than having to deal with cancer and as with all cancers and health issues in general, early detection is key. Having regular smear tests means that any change in cells will be detected and monitored. It is recommended that you have a smear test every 3 years up to the age of 50 and every 5 years from 50 to 65. It's free for everybody over the age of 25 but if you have symptoms or anything you are unhappy with before that age then I recommend you pay to have it done privately, which is what I did.

Having a smear test done will give you peace of mind and you will know that you are respecting your body and doing your very best for it. Please don't worry about being embarrassed in front of the nurse or doctor - they do this day in, day out! It literally only takes a few minutes but that few minutes could save your life.

This week, we are all being encouraged to partake in the #smearforsmear campaign, whereby you take a selfie with smeared lipstick and tag a friend. Follow the hashtag #smearforsmear on Instagram to check it out. Given that I am still recovering from pneumonia with hugely swollen glands, I don't fancy sharing a selfie but I am hoping that this post will go some way to raising awareness.

If you are due your smear test or have never had one, please book it today! If you could like to read more about the campaign, you can do so here.
