Why the new Olaplex mask is not for me...

Olaplex Weightless Nourishing Mask review, I hate the new Olaplex mask

Regular readers of this blog will know that I have dry, frizzy and quite knotty hair. It's also quite fine but I have a lot of it. Really, it's a delight! I'm not really complaining because I've had so much hair loss through illness that I'm genuinely grateful to have hair to work with! Because of the texture of my hair (it's not actually in bad condition, it's really a texture issue), I tend to prefer using masks to conditioners. I'm trying not to buy products until I finish what I have so when I recently used up a mask, I decided to buy the new Olaplex Weightless Nourishing Mask, aimed at fine-medium hair and want to share my thoughts with you today.

I've used Olaplex products for years and the No 3 Perfector really saved my hair during the pandemic, when I suffered a lot of hair loss on top of what I had already lost due to having Lyme Disease and other infections. I find that their original shampoo and conditioner really helped my hair too but are too heavy to use consistently so I would use every 3rd wash. I have used the serum, oil, bond smoother - basically every product they have made, so it made sense that I would want to try their new mask. I also bought the new No 4 Fine Bond Maintenance Shampoo as I assumed it would work as well as the original, but be more suited to my fine hair.

The mask description states that it will add hydration as well 63% more shine and added volume - everything I want in a hair product. The ingredient list shows plenty of nourishing and hydrating ingredients so I really had high hopes. It also promises to prevent breakage and promote the appearance of stronger hair.

Usually when I use a mask, my hair feels instantly silkier upon rinsing so I was surprised when my hair felt coarse. I used my usual styling products but my hair just didn't feel or look as I like it to. It felt coarse and was frizzy. Yes, there was some volume but at a price. The next time I used it, it felt the same after rinsing so I used a little more oil with my heat protectant in order to reduce frizz and help it to feel less coarse but it just didn't happen.

I have used it five times now and I remained very disappointed. This is aimed at my hair type but it doesn't hydrate or add shine. I've used masks that have cost a lot less than this one that have given far superior results. I'd go as far as to say that it's one of the worst hair masks I have ever used. It's very disappointing given how much I love other products from the brand and that it's expensive.

Back to Kérastase I go. It's my number one trusted haircare brand that I have been using for around 25 years and it has yet to be beaten. A lesson learned!

Have you tried this mask? If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Have any other products disappointed you recently?
