Garnier Cruelty Free Haircare Review

Garnier Haircare Review

I'm aware that I post a lot of luxury brands and products on here, but I'm not averse to using budget brands when they perform well - who doesn't want to save some money where they can? I first used the Garnier 3 in 1 Hair Mask two years ago, when they were first released (review here) and I was recently given the opportunity to try another mask from the range and one of their new shampoo bars. I think that it's fantastic that these are now available in supermarkets and on the high street. My mother actually asked me a few months back where she would find a shampoo bar, as she is becoming more and more aware of sustainability as the years go on - it's almost like that old show The Good Life, because she grows her own fruit and veg and uses peelings, egg shells etc for her composters. I was delighted to be able to tell her that she can now get a shampoo bar with her weekly shop. All Garnier products are now officially cruelty free and they have been given the stamp of approval from the Cruelty Free International Leaping Bunny Programme, which is a huge achievement for any brand, but particularly for a budget-friendly brand.

There are four types of Ultimate Blends Shampoo Bars available, depending on your hair type: Honey Treasures, which is for strengthening your hair, Delicate Oat, which is for those with a sensitive scalp, Ginger Recovery, which is for weak or dull hair and Coconut Hydrating, which is for normal hair. To be honest, I could use all four of these bars, as after months of not being in the salon, I have lots of hair issues, but I chose the Coconut Hydrating one, as I always need hydration and I adore the scent of coconuts! This is a 97% biodegradable formula and 100% vegan.

To use the shampoo bars, you wet your hair, as you would before using any shampoo, then you also wet the shampoo bar. You then hold the bar to your hair and lather all over - it really doesn't take much effort to create a lather. I always wash my hair twice (once to get rid of product build up & grease and then to actually clean my hair), and my worry was that my hair might feel stripped. I don't like to hear a squeak from my hair, yet I like to know that all of the product has been rinsed. I need not have had any worries in that regard, because this shampoo bar leaves my hair feeling very clean, but also very soft. It's just as well that i don't have all four, because I'd probably want to wash my hair four times! I love this so much that I'm going to buy for my nieces and nephews, to get them into using shampoo bars while they're young. It is priced at €9.99 or £6.99 and will last for months as a little goes a long way. Currently 3 for 2 on Look Fantastic.

Now on to the 3-in-1 hair masks, of which there are five to choose; Goji, Papaya, Coconut, Aloe Vera, and Watermelon, which is the one I chose, as it's for coloured hair and I just love the scent of watermelon - it always reminds me of holidays! You may be wondering how it is a 3 in 1 product - well it can be used as a traditional conditioner, an intensive hair mask, or a leave in conditioner. Again, it's 100% vegan and made from 97% biodegradable ingredients.

My preference is to use it as a hair mask, because my hair is so dry (and in need of a hair cut - it's been 9 months, and counting), and I find masks help to inject some moisture into my hair. What I love about this mask (apart from the scent), is that it doesn't weigh my hair down, yet I can comb through my hair easily and it also helps to control the frizz, to leave my hair looking smooth - always my aim! The first time I used it, I swished my hair around to see if my husband would notice the scent and he said I smelled like a holiday!

I also love that the tub contains a whopping 390ml, which will last ages, as I've trained my hair to only be washed once weekly. This is currently priced at 8.99 or 2 for 12 or £6.99 or two for £8 in Boots. Currently mixed 3 for 2 on Look Fantastic, so you could buy a mixture of shampoos and conditioners.

Have you used any of these products yet? I'd love to hear your thoughts on shampoo bars?
