I must own between 80-100 makeup brushes, which is completely ridiculous and unnecessary! As with most things, I tend to only use my favourites and realistically, they're all that I need - yes, multiples are handy so I don't have to wash every time I use them but they're not actually necessary. I was away on three separate occasions in December and only packed my favourite brushes each time. Let me share my most used brushes with you...
MAC 239 Eye Shader Brush: This brush has been a staple in my collection for years and years (well not this exact one, but I've repurchased a number of times). It's flat and dense, which makes it perfect for applying shadow to the mobile lid or packing on a loose pigment. I use it every time that I wear eyeshadow and it has been washed hundreds of times and is still perfect. I really rate the quality of MAC brushes.
Scott Barnes Eye Blender Brush: I have had this brush for 6 years and it's still in perfect condition. I love Scott Barnes brushes but they don't seem to be available on this side of the Atlantic anymore, which is a shame. Eyeshadow almost blends itself with this brush. The size is perfect for getting into the crease area and because it's tapered, it means there is no chance of harsh edges on your shadow - everything just blends so easily.
Scott Barnes Flawless Face Brush: I use this brush in so many ways - for foundation/to blend cream blush and bronzer and as a final step to ensure that everything is seamlessly blended. It's a workhorse! It's soft, densely packed and it honestly makes applying base products so quick and easy. Side note: It isn't dirty, the bristles are coloured!
Real Techniques Blush Brush: No matter how many brands of brush I try, this is the one I always come back to for powder blush. It is so soft, applies just the right amount of blush and blends it into the skin so well. It is, without doubt, my favourite blush brush and it's so affordable too.
Charlotte Tilbury Powder and Sculpt Brush: I don't strictly 'contour' these days, but I do like to add a bit of definition and this is my go-to brush for that purpose. The shape is perfect for hugging the cheekbones and also for applying powder bronzer to the temples. As with all of the brushes in this post, it washes well (but looking at the photo above, I forgot to was on this occasion!!).
Real Techniques Setting Brush: I use this for applying powder in select areas - I'm not one for applying powder all over my face! I find that it applies just the right amount without being too heavy or cakey.
Real Techniques Deluxe Crease Brush: I actually use this for concealer, rather than shadow (although it would work very well with cream shadows). I love how it buffs concealer in and because it's so dense, the product applies seamlessly, without any streaks.
I'd love to hear what your go-to brushes are? I must admit that although I don't need any new brushes, I have my eye on Tati's range!
