I'll admit that I don't use face masks as often as I used to because I tend to rely on beauty tools a lot more these days (see post here). That being said, I do love the instant results that a mask can give so I will always have some in my stash for times when my skin needs an instant boost. Here are my most used, depending on what my skin needs at that moment in time.
Texture: Oskia Renaissance Mask: I've been using this mask for 10/11 years and will probably always have a tub in my stash because I love it so much! It's peach in colour and when applied and massaged into the skin, it turns white - at this point, you stop massaging and just leave for 10-15 minutes (maybe just 10 minutes for the first few uses), before rinsing and removing. It gently, but effectively, exfoliates the skin using fruit enzymes but it also nourishes the skin so after using, skin feels super smooth but not at all tight.
Dullness: Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque: I have been using this for over 20 years and I always say that this takes around 5 years off my skin! When my skin is looking dull and drab, I always reach for this super nourishing mask. It contains vitamins A, C, E and F, as well as panthenol, algae extract and beta glucan, all of which combine to hydrate, revive, strengthen and revive the skin! It really is a brilliant product for adding life to your skin and is the perfect pick me up or product to use before a big day or a night out.
Congestion: Caudalie Instant Detox Mask: Is there anybody who doesn't suffer from congestion at times? I think not! This mask helps to draw out impurities using pink clay, whilst also gently exfoliating. When it dries down, you can see the most congested areas because they will have little dots where the excess oils and sebum is being pulled out. It gets quite tight as it dries down but once rinsed, skin is left looking super clean and feeling comfortable.
Texture, dullness & congestion: The Ordinary AHA Peeling Solution: For times when all of the above issues occur at the same time, I reach for this product. It contains 30% AHAs and 2% BHAs, which combine to penetrate the pores to dissolve and remove sebum, exfoliate the skin and thereby brighten the skin. It's pretty potent so the maximum recommended time to leave it on the skin is 10 minutes but I would recommend building up to that time, starting at maybe 5/6 minutes if you're new to it, particularly if you are new to acids. This is the most affordable product in this post and is very effective but just don't overdo it - once, twice weekly is absolutely ample for use and make sure to wear adequate SPF during the day (should be doing this anyway but be extra vigilant after using this product!).
Dehydration: Laneige Bouncy & Firm Sleeping Mask: I love an overnight mask and this one is particularly great if my skin is thirsty and tight. It contains collagen, peptides, peony extract and green tea, amongst other ingredients. These combine to increase skin hydration, improve elasticity (and therefore bounce), soothe the skin and increase cellular turnover. I find it instantly soothing and I almost feel like my shoulders relax when I apply this because the soothing feeling makes me feel pampered and relaxed. It's not overly sticky (so don't worry about sticking to your pillow!) and upon waking, my skin instantly looks plump and feels hydrated.
Tired skin: Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask: Is it a mask or a night cream? It's both, in so far as you *could* use it every night during a time where your skin is looking particularly tired - new parents, for example! Given the name, it's obviously great for use on (and after) flights, but I only fly a few times a year at most so I don't think that the name should put people off buying if you're not a frequent flyer. The texture is thick and it feels instantly calming and comforting on the skin. I personally like to leave it on overnight but you can use it in the traditional mask way by applying to clean, dry skin and removing after 10 minutes. It contains hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which are pretty powerful humectants. It also contains niacinamide, which helps to improve skin tone. The overall result the following morning is plump, nourished and glowing skin.
Do you use face masks regularly? I'd love to hear what your favourites are!
