The one skincare category that I believe is worth the splurge is serums. I'm happy to use budget cleansers and moisturisers because serums are the products that do the most work and although there are great budget serums on the market (particularly in recent years), as I am getting older, I find that I need products that will actually live up their claims and it just so happens that the ones I love most are quite pricey. In order to justify a repurchase, I need to have seen a visible difference in my skin while using the product and one such product is Oskia Midnight Elixir. I have repurchased this three times!
I'm a very big fan of Oskia products in general. I love the backstory of the founder whose father brought MSM to the market for racehorses and seeing the success with the supplement, she decided to try MSM herself after she's had an accident and the cartilage in her knee was damaged. This led her to work with some experts to create her brand.
Midnight Elixir, as the name suggests, is a night-time serum and I really love a good PM product but it can get to work while I sleep and while it doesn't have any other products to compete with. This serum works with our circadian rhythm to help our skin to regenerate and repair. It can be used all over the face and neck (including the eye area), which I love because it means I no longer buy a separate neck serum or cream - I do still use an eye cream but that's just my decision, it isn't actually necessary.
It contains 30 actives (please don't be scared by this - I have reactive/sensitive skin and have been able to use it without any issues) - a combination of Vitamins A, C, E, B3, B9 and Pro-Vitamin D3, growth factors, resveratrol, Melatonin Liposomes and Oskia's trademarked MSM, among others. It targets everything from fine lines and wrinkles to skin laxity, dullness and dehydration, whilst also supporting the barrier function. It has a very faint floral scent (but doesn't contain essential oils) and a very lightweight texture. Only a pea-sized amount is needed and it spreads easily, layering well with a moisturiser.
This is not a product that you will see improvements from in just a few days (apart from an improvement in hydration levels), but with consistent use, I have seen improvements in terms of the elasticity of my skin - it looks and feels firmer and plump. I've also noticed a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and my skin looks calm and even in tone and is hydrated. My skin just looks healthier overall and firmer, which is exactly what I want from an overnight product, especially one that is so expensive!
The price may be a sticking point for a lot of people, however I will point out that the bottle contains 50ml of product instead of the usual 30 in most serums and I promise you that a little really does go a long way. Also, if you purchase from Cult Beauty, my friend Laura's code LLOUXCB will save you 20% - every little helps!
If you're under the age of 35, you don't need this product but for anyone in their late 30s and beyond, who are starting to see laxity in their skin and fine lines, and want to try to improve the elasticity and plumpness of their skin (and have the budget - remember this is not a need, it's a want), then I would highly, highly recommend this product.
